Your Car Donation Can Change the Life of a Child

Thursday, March 3, 2016 9:09 PM

capital-campaign1.jpgWhile they may not be of driving age, children’s lives are greatly impacted when you donate your car to a needy family.

Donating your car not only allows parents to gain better employment, but it allows kids to do better in school, attend more after-school activities, and have better access to health care.

Here are several ways donating your car helps children.

  • Parents gain mobility. A car donation provides much-needed transportation, which can enable a family to make a number of changes in their lives. For example, a new car can enable the breadwinner of a family to accept higher paying job opportunities that may be further from home. A car can help foster a better home life and build stronger family ties.
  • Helps children with school. Having a car means that parents can drive their children to school and pick them up afterwards. While the bus is a good option, circumstances can make...

Donating a Car to Charity Can Avoid Costly Repairs (1)

Thursday, February 25, 2016 4:14 PM

Donating-A-Car.jpgCars need maintenance and repairs on a fairly regular basis to keep them in good running condition. As a car gets older, repairs become more frequent and more extensive.

Once repairs start adding up to a point where it becomes economically unfeasible to pay for them, it’s time to consider getting a new car.

It is also important to decide what will happen to the old car.

Some people sell the car for scrap, but most people either decide on selling their old car or donating the car to charity.

There are a lot of factors to take into account before retiring a car, a few of which are discussed below:

  1. Age of the car: If the car is only a few years old and requires a major repair, then it is likely worth the money to pay for the repair. The rest of the car is probably still in good condition, and the damaged part would be worth replacing. An extensive repair on a 10 or 15 year-old car may be...

Parents' Car Ownership Boosts Healthcare for Kids

Thursday, February 4, 2016 6:35 PM

Donating CarsThe connection between vehicle access and health is rarely discussed, but there is a strong relationship between these two aspects of family life.

Without a car, many parents rely on emergency vehicles for any medical condition. An ambulance is not only a costly way to get to a hospital, but it is less likely to be used than a personal car.

Worse yet, children can't take an ambulance to get a periodic check-ups or to keep a doctor's appointment ... meaning those essential visits may get skipped.

A reliable vehicle can drastically improve the life of low-income families by providing them the ability to take care of their own transportation needs. That is why Vehicles for Change is so passionate about helping people donate a car to charity.

3 Common Car Donation Tax Deduction Errors

Thursday, January 28, 2016 7:20 PM

Car Donation Tax DeductionFiling taxes can be a daunting task, and car donation tax deductions can seem especially confusing at first.

The three most common mistakes people make when filing for car donation tax deductions are:

  1. Missing forms (especially 1098-C)
  2. Mistaking quid pro quo donations
  3. Not choosing a reputable organization

Avoid these mistakes, and even first-time car donors can normally clear every hurdle without problem.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your vehicle donation.

Tax Deduction Forms

Car deductions over $500 require donors to fill out IRS forms. Vehicles for Change provides a tax receipt to the donor of each vehicle, once the donated vehicle is processed. When a donated vehicle is sold for more than $500, Vehicles for Change sends donors the IRS tax form 1098-C.This form is sent within 30 days of the vehicle being sold.

Thursday, January 21, 2016 7:48 PM

Donating CarCar donation programs can be a great way to get rid of an unwanted car while helping out a worthy cause. For donors, donating a car can be as easy and quick as a phone call.

A quick search online will reveal organizations and charities with car donation programs. Whether one is interested in education, employment, animal rights, or medical research, there is an organization that will gladly accept your old car.

But how can you make sure the donation is going to the right cause?

Select a Cause

There are dozens of charities in every community, and all of them need help. Some charities benefit the immediate community, while others are large and serve an entire state or region. If a donor’s goal is donating a car to help a charity, it is important to select which cause he or she wants the donation to help.

Before giving to the first car donation program advertised on TV, donors should...

After Auto Donation: Where Does A Car Go?

Auto DonationAuto donation to Vehicles for Change sets in motion the process that moves unwanted and unneeded automobiles from the garage to a family in need.

Donors across the United States use charities to get rid of their unwanted vehicles, not knowing how their vehicle will be used or what happens in between donating the vehicle and a family receiving the vehicle.

At Vehicles for Change, there are several ways a donated vehicle can be used.

First, the car is inspected

Immediately after donation, the donated vehicle is inspected to determine the mechanical condition of the car. Donated vehicles that are awarded to low-income families must meet Vehicles for Change’s strict reliability standards.

Depending on the car’s type and condition, donated cars may also be sold to the public through Freedom Wheels, VFC’s used car lot.

How to Find the Best Car Donation Program

Thursday, January 7, 2016 7:37 PM

Car Donation ProgramsDonors normally want as much of the value of their donation as possible to go directly to helping people.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Car donations, for instance, are accepted by most charities ... but they don't handle the transaction directly.

They use a "middleman" and that can often cut the value of the donation (the amount received by those in need) significantly.

Cut the charity middleman

Avoiding a middleman is possible. Donors can find out whether a charity is operating independently or not by calling and asking how much of a charity’s donations are used to help people in need.

Tax benefits of donations

When tax benefits are important, donors must find a charity that qualifies for tax exempt status. This means the charity has been approved by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) organization.

Donors should always verify a charity’s tax-exempt status before committing to...

Tax Tips for Vehicle Donation

Vehicle DonationThe benefits of tax incentives are an excellent reason to donate an older vehicle. The type of charity a car is donated to affects how much a donor can deduct from his or her taxes; therefore, it is important to give to the right charity. Donating a vehicle is a personal decision and should be weighed carefully to determine if it is the right choice for the car owner. If it is, there are several measures the owner should take to protect himself or herself from scams or IRS audits.

Best Types of Charity to Donate To

Charities are designed to help people, but vehicle donation charities are not all the same. Donators often intend for the vehicle to be given to a family in need. This means the donor needs to look for a charity that fixes and donates cars to low income families instead of auctioning the car for charity money.

Occasionally, we even get donated car that is already handicapped accessible. That allows us to award that vehicle to a disabled person.

The following are a few ways cars can be made accessible.

Lifts and ramps: Vans are often equipped with lifts for people in wheelchairs, and removable ramps can be fitted to the vehicle as well. This is especially helpful for families with wheelchair bound passengers or for people who are chauffeuring or shuttling wheelchair bound individuals. They can also be installed for wheelchair bound drivers, though these drivers will need further modifications to the car

Some vehicle donation programs offer services by auctioning off donated cars for significant sums of money. There is a wide variety of non-profits who depend on this kind of contribution, and each of these organizations does important work to reach community members in need. Usually these charity organizations serve a multitude of purposes, helping communities by providing a wide range of services. How to Get Maximum Tax Benefits Through Car Donation

However, since some people would claim false amounts on their tax forms (in an attempt to get better tax breaks), this policy was changed and new laws were set in place.

Questions About Vehicle Donations

Cars For CharityVehicles for donation to charity: do they have to in good mechanical condition? Do donated vehicles have to run at all?

Can you donate a motorcycle to charity? How about a hybrid vehicle, a boat, and RV, or a car that needs repairs?

Let's take a look at those vehicle donation questions

There are two basic ways in which charities can ensure that less fortunate people benefit from vehicle donations.

The first is essentially a car auction, and is more commonly done by non-specialized charities that handle a wide variety of donations. Donated cars that are sold through auction are donated in any condition and sold to the highest bidder.

Even if a car is completely non-functional, it can be purchased by a car restorer or someone who will break it down and use the parts. Some cars for charity end up being sold for their parts, and are subsequently sent to a scrap yard; even these provide...

After donating a car to charity, low-income families are given access to a faster and more flexible form of transportation. While public transportation provides mobility, it is not a substitute for the autonomy of owning a personal vehicle. Additionally, certain occupations require reliable transportation, and that limits potential candidates who don't own a car.

Vehicle Donation: It's An Easy Process

Thursday, October 11, 2012 11:14 AM

One factor that may deter families from donating a vehicle is their concern that the donation process may be complicated. At Vehicles for Change, we make car donation easy!

Other than scheduling a pick-up time and cleaning personal items out of your car, when you donate to Vehicles for Change the only "to do" item on your list will be to make sure that the vehicle title is properly transferred to VFC.

Before calling VFC to donate your vehicle, we recommend checking your records to make sure that you have the title. To make the donation process move faster, VFC requests that the title be in the vehicle at the time of pick up. If this doesn't work, donors can mail the title to VFC after the vehicle has been picked up. Keep in mind that VFC can't process your vehicle donation without the title.

Also keep in mind that if there is a lien on the title, you will need a lien release before the...

How Are Donated Vehicles Awarded to Families?

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 5:05 PM

In the Vehicles for Change program, every donated vehicle impacts a low-income family. If the donated car is sent to auction or sold on our retail lot, 100 percent of the proceeds go back into the program and are used to repair vehicles for worthy families. If the vehicle can be expected to provide two years or 24,000 miles of service, then the car is deemed a “keeper” and awarded to a VFC family.

Recipient families come to VFC in two ways: they are either referred to VFC by our partnering social service agencies (such as local Department of Social Services offices) or they apply to our program independently.

When VFC staff review the applications, they go over it thoroughly to make sure the applicant is qualified for our program. The staff looks closely at items such as the applicant’s income and expenses, to make sure that the applying family can afford the ongoing cost of car...

Do You Have a Broken-Down Car? Donate It to Vehicles for Change!

Tuesday, August 7, 2012 11:19 AM

Some may wonder if a charity would want the rusted and broken-down car that has been sitting in their driveways or at a local repair shop. From Vehicles for Change’s perspective, the answer is: yes! Any donated car – no matter how old or how far beyond repair – contributes to the VFC program.

When a donated vehicle doesn’t meet our safety or reliability standards, and can’t be improved cost-effectively, we send that car to auction.

To prepare for auction, we spruce up the vehicle and select an auction partner where the selling price will be maximized. We also assign a minimum bid value to assure it isn’t sold for less than fair price. Once the car is auctioned off, all proceeds are used to prepare more cars for low-income families.

If you would like to donate your “junk” vehicle to VFC, you don’t even need to move it from the repair shop. Our contracted towing companies will work...
