Tax Tips for Vehicle Donation

Thursday, December 31, 2015 6:33 PM

Vehicle DonationThe benefits of tax incentives are an excellent reason to donate an older vehicle. The type of charity a car is donated to affects how much a donor can deduct from his or her taxes; therefore, it is important to give to the right charity. Donating a vehicle is a personal decision and should be weighed carefully to determine if it is the right choice for the car owner. If it is, there are several measures the owner should take to protect himself or herself from scams or IRS audits.

Best Types of Charity to Donate To

Charities are designed to help people, but vehicle donation charities are not all the same. Donators often intend for the vehicle to be given to a family in need. This means the donor needs to look for a charity that fixes and donates cars to low income families instead of auctioning the car for charity money.

The best type of charity to donate to is one that accepts vehicle...

Why do People Donate Cars?

Thursday, December 17, 2015 8:10 PM

Donate CarsSurprisingly enough, it is sometimes better to donate a car to charity than to sell it or trade it in on a newer model.

When you donate your car, you not only get to enjoy tax breaks, but you enjoy the satisfaction of giving to less fortunate individuals.

Here are some of the factors concerning whether it is better to sell a car or donate it:

  • Tax breaks: Financial incentives are an important reason people give to charity instead of throwing their old possessions away. The value of a tax break helps when you donate clothes, toys, books, bicycles, boats, automobiles, and more ...

Tax deductions for car donations are determined in part by the value of the car, and in part by how the car was used by the car donation charity that received it.

  • Avoiding hassle:Selling a used car is difficult. Generally the seller needs to have the car fully serviced and sometimes have the car touched up or...

Car donations made a difference in the lives of three hardworking mothers. Equilla, Serenity and Mary will no longer need to rely on others for transportation. With a set of keys in their hands, they are now able to provide their families with more.

“The most challenging part of being without a car was not being able to do necessary things for myself,” said Equilla. Now that Equilla has her own 2000 Mercury Sable, her 15 mile commute to work will be stress-free and she will be able to grocery shop with ease.

Before receiving a vehicle, it was difficult for Mary to transport her children to a baby sitter and after school care. “Now that I have a van, I will no longer need to walk everywhere with my four children,” said Mary.

Serenity is thankful for her 2000 Ford Focus because of the goals she can now achieve. “I will be able to continue going to school, advance my career and take my...

Donating a Car to Help a Disabled Person

Thursday, December 10, 2015 3:46 PM

Donating A CarMany people with disabilities can drive; they simply need access to vehicles.

At Vehicles for Change, we can sometimes modify vehicles that can then be donated to disabled drivers.

Occasionally, we even get donated car that is already handicapped accessible. That allows us to award that vehicle to a disabled person.

The following are a few ways cars can be made accessible.

Lifts and ramps: Vans are often equipped with lifts for people in wheelchairs, and removable ramps can be fitted to the vehicle as well. This is especially helpful for families with wheelchair bound passengers or for people who are chauffeuring or shuttling wheelchair bound individuals. They can also be installed for wheelchair bound drivers, though these drivers will need further modifications to the car

Hand controls: Mechanical hand controls for speed and braking can be used by people with severe spinal injuries....

Car DonationsThere is much more benefit to donating a car to charity than just getting a tax write-off at the end of the year. The impact donating a car can have for an impoverished family is immeasurable.

It is certainly admirable to donate food, clothing, or toys, to the poor ... but providing those in need with a means of transportation can help them to get out of poverty for good.

How car donations can help those in need

Here are some of the impacts of car donations:

Car donations benefit a variety of people who are experiencing hardships of all kinds. Low-income families confined to poverty because of low paying jobs are often in greatest need.

Veterans are also in need, as they often suffer from disorders and disabilities that make it difficult for them to raise the money for a car. They can become trapped in a cycle of poverty. All those caught in poverty for any reason are unable to improve...

How to Decide Whether or Not to Donate Your Car to Charity

Thursday, November 12, 2015 9:20 PM

Donate A CarYou have a car you want to get rid of – could donating it to charity be a good idea?

There are many sides to the discussion of car donations, with some thinking you should get as much money as possible out of your old car while others believe you should help those in need.

Fortunately, it’s not such a stark compromise. There are a few organizations that allow you to maximize your tax deduction, while helping others in need. That makes for a win-win situation

Here are a few of the factors you should consider before deciding what to do with your old car.

Determine the value of your car. Even if the car is in poor condition, the brand name and model might give it a higher value than you might expect. You can also expect higher tax deductions if you choose to donate the car, and your donation will greatly benefit both the charity and the family that receives your donation.

Why You Should Donate Your Car to the Poor

Thursday, November 5, 2015 9:11 PM

Donate Your CarThere are several options for getting rid of an old car – giving it to a friend, selling it, or repurposing it are all viable choices. But another option is to donate it. There are some obvious blessings for the recipient of a donation; but there are also benefits for the donor. Below are a few of the reasons to donate your car.

  • Avoid a hassle. When people make a decision to buy a new car, they usually want to be rid of their old one as soon as possible. Selling it or repurposing it takes time, and giving it to a friend has the potential to create strife in your relationship with that friend and others who might be jealous. Donate your car to charity for the sake of simplicity, or simply to get it out of your driveway quickly.
  • Help a child. When you donate your car to specific  charitable organizations that assist families, it can be purchased at a low price for a family in need of...

VFC | Car DonationThere are a number of ways to help the less fortunate in your community. From serving food at a local soup kitchen to donating your old books to a homeless shelter, options are plentiful.

Car donations are an excellent way to help provide for a family in need. Moreover, it gives that family a shot at upward mobility.

Here are a few of the benefits of car donation.

Car donation is fast and simple: Donating your car is a simple way of taking it off your hands, saving you from the hassle or stress of having to sell it online or  trading it in to a used car dealer. Getting rid of an old car can take months if you try to sell it yourself.

Fair Market Value for Donations: Vehicles for Change

Thursday, October 22, 2015 8:17 PM

money-and-car.jpgWhen you donate your car to charity, make sure you know whether or not the charity can offer the fair market value for donations. Previously, determining the amount of a tax deduction for a car donation used to simply require knowing the value of the car, but now it is more complicated. Since people used to claim their car was worth more than it was, there has been a change in tax deduction protocol.

Now, the amount of a person's tax deduction for their donated car depends on the value of the car and how the charity uses that vehicle. For example, a car donation company that auctions cars to the highest bidder may only get a few hundred dollars per car, even though the cars' value may be $3,000 or more. In these cases, the IRS will only offer a tax deduction for the amount of the car’s sale at auction.

Fortunately, some car donation charities do not merely sell the cars at auction to...

Choosing a Vehicle Donation Program

Thursday, October 15, 2015 8:19 PM

Some vehicle donation programs offer services by auctioning off donated cars for significant sums of money. There is a wide variety of non-profits who depend on this kind of contribution, and each of these organizations does important work to reach community members in need. Usually these charity organizations serve a multitude of purposes, helping communities by providing a wide range of services. Some charities are specifically car donation charities, collecting cars for the express purpose of repairing them and providing low-cost vehicles to at-risk families in the area.

Car donation charities such as Vehicles for Change, that use donated cars to make an impact locally are less common than vehicle donation programs that culminate in auctions.  When a car is donated to one of these charities, it must be in good condition in order to be awarded to a family. It can be damaged, but it...

Consider Donating Abandoned Cars to Charity

Wednesday, October 7, 2015 5:13 PM

stronger-families.jpgFamilies that have extensive land often find old and abandoned trash on their property. Furniture, scrap metal, and old bicycles are commonly found in a person's woods, and generally have to be disposed of by the property owner. Occasionally one finds even larger objects abandoned on the property – such as a car.

Vehicles are sometimes abandoned when the owner doesn't know what else to do with the car and has no patience for disposing of it properly. In these cases, the property owner that finds the car should consider donating it to a charity. As car donation charities usually pick up the vehicles from the donor, this has the added benefit of getting the car off the land and potentially earning the landowner a tax deduction.

Donating cars to charity is beneficial to all parties involved for a multitude of reasons. It provides the charity with a car and raises the charities visibility,...

Shawntice Thomas used to get her three children up early every morning in order to get to the bus stop and then on to day care.

Afterwards, Shawntice needed to wait for another bus and risk being 30 minutes late to work if transfers didn't work out just right.

Public transit routes with buses that arrived every half-hour forced Shawntice to make a lot of hard choices.

To avoid being late to work in the mornings – or 45 minutes late to pick up her seven-year-old daughter, Aniya, in the evenings – Shawntice began paying $130 each week to a neighbor in exchange for a ride.

That worked until a new work schedule made it impossible for the helpful neighbor to continue with the arrangement.

Thanks to a donor, though, Shawntice gratefully received a 2007 Ford Focus from V. She is now able to get to work on time every day.

Donating a Car to Charity Can Avoid Costly Repairs

Tuesday, February 3, 2015 4:54 PM

Donating-A-Car.jpgCars need maintenance and repairs on a fairly regular basis to keep them in good running condition. As a car gets older, repairs become more frequent and more extensive.

Once repairs start adding up to a point where it becomes economically unfeasible to pay for them, it’s time to consider getting a new car.

It is also important to decide what will happen to the old car.

Some people sell the car for scrap, but most people either decide on selling their old car or donating the car to charity.

There are a lot of factors to take into account before retiring a car, a few of which are discussed below:

  1. Age of the car: If the car is only a few years old and requires a major repair, then it is likely worth the money to pay for the repair. The rest of the car is probably still in good condition, and the damaged part would be worth replacing. An extensive repair on a 10 or 15 year-old car may be...

How to Get Maximum Tax Benefits Through Car Donation

However, since some people would claim false amounts on their tax forms (in an attempt to get better tax breaks), this policy was changed and new laws were set in place.

Donating your car not only allows parents to gain better employment, but it allows kids to do better in school, attend more after-school activities, and have better access to health care.

Here are several ways donating your car helps children.

  • Parents gain mobility. A car donation provides much-needed transportation, which can enable a family to make a number of changes in their lives. For example, a new car can enable the breadwinner of a family to accept higher paying job opportunities that may be further from home. A car can help foster a better home life and build stronger family ties.
  • Helps children with school. Having a car means that parents can drive their children to school and pick them up afterwards. While the bus is a good option, circumstances can make...

**LEARN** The types of Cars for Charity

Thursday, January 15, 2015 1:57 PM

Organizations often accept a wide range of vehicles for donation. This post will provide a brief explanation for how various charities use non-running vehicles, vehicles that need moderate repairs, working vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and other types of vehicles like motorcycles, boats, and RVs. Organizations handle each of these types of contributions differently.

If the car runs, the charity needs to have a good idea of the extent of any damage and how well the car functions. This will in turn give the charity an idea of how to handle the donated cars for charity. Cars that do not run at all, and have not run for years, may not be repaired but can still be immensely useful for charities.

There are two basic ways in which charities and less fortunate people benefit from vehicle donations. The first is essentially a car auction, and is more commonly done by non-specialized charities that...

Questions About Vehicle Donations

Thursday, January 15, 2015 1:56 PM

Cars For CharityVehicles for donation to charity: do they have to in good mechanical condition? Do donated vehicles have to run at all?

Can you donate a motorcycle to charity? How about a hybrid vehicle, a boat, and RV, or a car that needs repairs?

Let's take a look at those vehicle donation questions

There are two basic ways in which charities can ensure that less fortunate people benefit from vehicle donations.

The first is essentially a car auction, and is more commonly done by non-specialized charities that handle a wide variety of donations. Donated cars that are sold through auction are donated in any condition and sold to the highest bidder.

Even if a car is completely non-functional, it can be purchased by a car restorer or someone who will break it down and use the parts. Some cars for charity end up being sold for their parts, and are subsequently sent to a scrap yard; even these provide...

Parents' Car Ownership Boosts Healthcare for Kids

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 3:04 PM

Donating CarsThe connection between vehicle access and health is rarely discussed, but there is a strong relationship between these two aspects of family life.

Without a car, many parents rely on emergency vehicles for any medical condition. An ambulance is not only a costly way to get to a hospital, but it is less likely to be used than a personal car.

Worse yet, children can't take an ambulance to get a periodic check-ups or to keep a doctor's appointment ... meaning those essential visits may get skipped.
